I've been a Zelda fan for (subjectively) 90% of my life. I have played and beat most of them. The reason I say that Skyward Sword is one of the best (in my opinion) is due to of a lot of contributing factors: the story really ties into other Zelda games and shows how the legacy began. There are some very interesting and unexpected plot twists, too. Gameplay-wise, it's very challenging (and I won't even begin to speak about Hero mode); from dungeons to boss battles, all of it can't simply be walked out of easily. The music is as ambient as always and goes well with the beautiful and fantastic scenery. Zelda's prettier than ever, and even the main antagonist is, eerily, a likable character.
As for the things I personally didn't like with the game, I was a little upset that there weren't more areas to travel to. Fi (the essence of the master sword and the hero's aid) is a cool character, but she can get kind of annoying with her tendency to point out the obvious. I also felt like some things were left unexplained.
Overall, I think if people could just stop and think for a moment to admire the little things in a game and all the hard work developers put into games, there wouldn't be so much to complain about. I paid $70 for my copy, which came with the golden Wii remote and the bonus soundtrack; and I have to say that it was a $70 well spent.
I apologize for the long passage, but I do feel strongly about this since Skyward Sword is like a shining ray of hope compared to all the garbage out there today.
