Been playing this game the last few days. I'm kind of underwhelmed.
The fact that Mario moves in 8 directions is weird, what with the circle pad and all. Having a run button is odd, too. I feel like they just ported over code/features from SM64DS without regards to whether it makes sense on the 3D, where we have analog controls.
The levels are pretty solid, though, which is nice. The powerups are fun, although I wish Raccoon/Tanooki Mario could actually fly. It's weird that the Boomerang Suit is held in reserve so much, acting like it's the game's super coolest mode, when it's basically just Fire Mario with only one projectile and smaller range.
The 3D is kind of dumb. The game was much more enjoyable to me when I turned it off. You'll read reviews that say there are a few parts where you "need" 3D; they're wrong. The rooms where you "need" it, it doesn't actually help at all because the camera is locked into a specific position to create an optical illusion in the first place, and the button that you can stand on to move the camera temporarily works with and without 3D. The people who claim 3D helps with jumps are largely talkin' out their butts, too, at least as far as I was concerned: I almost exclusively used shadows to judge that stuff.
I didn't like how the game was divided into worlds, yet the worlds didn't have any sort of theme. There wasn't a real 'sky world' or 'desert world' or anything, even though the backgrounds on some of the map screens might suggest as much. It felt a bit too SMG2 in that regard, and that was honestly something I didn't like about that game, too.
I wanted Yoshi :(
It was a good game over all, though.
