The Gamecube version of Return to Dreamland

Postby Galaxia64 » Sat Jun 02, 2012 2:14 am

I would now like to move onto the topic of the gamecube version of Return to Dreamland.
"It would have just been the same on the gamecube" -one of my internet friends
Actually, the more I look at previous images i had found on the internet a while before Return to Dreamland came out, the gameplay and story would have been so much different if it was released on the gamecube, and hears some reasons why.
But before you read onward, i may suggest beating Return to dreamland first, to avoid any spoilers you might see in this current post.

If return to dreamland was released on the gamecube, it would have
-not had King DeDeDe, Meta Knight, or Bandanna Dee as playable characters, it would have been your choice of any helpers from Superstar Ultras, "Helper to Hero" game
-level 5, otherwise known as "Nutty Noon", would have not looked like it has. It would have been some dark tower. Shown in the picture below. But if you look at this picture, and than look at the warpstar menu in Return to Dreamland, nutty noon looks more like this, and not what it actually looks like on the level area for it. Maybe nintendo did this to show how different things would have been.
-magolor would have most likely not been the final boss, let alone existed
-the graphics would have leaned towards Kirby air rides, and 20% of the game would have been reused material
-emerald Kirby would have not existed in both games either way
-mirror Kirby would still not exist
-Kirby would change color to a certain copy ability he would get, not stay pink (EX: Ice ability makes you turn blue; Fire Ability makes you turn red)
-the game would have probably leaned towards SuperStar Ultras gameplay, where helpers where your main source of help, and would have been significant to the small amount of plot at certain points in the game
-Meta Knight and King DeDeDe would have not been included in this version
-Plasma Kirby would replace Spark Kirby in this version, not be combined.
-leaf, whip, and all super abilities would have never existed
-the game may not have taken place on PopStar
-nintendo would have released Epic Yarn at a later date
-nutty noon would have been the final level

there are more Gamecube screenshots here, if you would like to take a look:

i might add to this again later, but for now, this is all i got.
---
But something a little off the gamecube version, through my findings about this, i learned that there was supposed to be a super Cutter ability, but it was canceled due to it being to similar too ultra sword.

The GameCube version looks better. I'm still not going to be able to play Return to Dream Land until I pick up a Wii U (my Wii is broken), so it's not really a fair comparison.
I like how much it has in common with the Kirby 64 and Kirby Air Ride art/graphic styles.

Tbh, I actually do like the look of the GameCube version more, but that's just because I like red shoes Kirby more than dark pink shoes. That's about it. XD

Pink is actually my favorite color (thanks to Kirby :D), but I'm not sure how I feel about the 3D games also changing his shoe color, it's a small change and doesn't mean much, but I do like the old design better, that may just be IMO though. XD

In the Iwata Asks interview though, they showed screenshots from like three different Kirby games (this was one of them) which were all cancelled before the final Kirby game that was Kirby's Return to Dream Land. One of the screenshots was of a Kirby game that was in a 3D enviornment (like games such as Super Mario 64, etc.) and it's a shame that game was cancelled, but I did love Return to Dream Land, so I'm not complaining but... I would love to see them do make a Kirby game where you can explore a 3D world/levels. Just running around the city in City Trial not on a vehicle is fun for me. I dunno, I just think it's really cool to be Kirby in a 3D world, so I hope a main game like that is made soon. o,o

Having a full-3D Kirby game would be amazing! I really hope that one would happen someday, but I doubt it.

I hate the idea of a full 3d Kirby game and I hope it never happens ever.

This gamecube game isn't a version of return to dreamland. It was its own game that got cancelled, just like each of those others. It's as similar to RtDL as the sprite-based one they made, or that full 3d bullcrap.

Because it's just not Kirby.

Kirby has always been, spinoffs aside, 2D platformer games, whether or not the graphics were 3D, the gameplay was always 2D. It just doesn't fit the Kirby style, honestly.
While Kirby Air Ride was 3D in movement, it'd just be awkward if it wasn't. Plus, as I've mentioned, it's a spinoff.

I don't think I could play a fully 3D Kirby game and enjoy it, it's just too different.

An Air Ride sequel would be good enough for me. Just having an expanded city and more room to move around. Having a mainstream full-3D Kirby game would be stupid.

Kirby's style can still be conveyed in 3D.

Sure it can be conveyed in 3d, but it would lose some of its charm.

Look, when making KCCh, we put in full 3d towns. Kirby can run around in them and has floating and everything. But there's no ability using, and puzzles are kept to a minimum, because it just doesn't feel right. Full 3d is all about exploration. If you can go in every direction, YOU NEED SOMETHING IN EVERY DIRECTION THAT'S WORTH GOING FOR. Kirby's whole thing is that he can float. He's got infinite jumps - or close to it in K64. In order to mix infinite jumping and full 3d, you need much, MUCH bigger levels with stuff going on in every direction. Something in the style of a Naughty Dog platformer, or a 3d Sonic game just wouldn't work with that.

Kirby's about starting in one place and going somewhere else. The only time they tried otherwise was Amazing Mirror, which I hate and which still put Kirby on very defined pathways. However, Kirby is also about hiding things in all the little nooks and crannies. Take any given level in Kirby's Adventure (Nightmare in Dreamland works too but their lazy backgrounds kind of miss the point) - Kirby goes from point A to point B, and you know that's what he's going to do! You start the level and say "well the path goes in this direction, guess I'm following it!" And going all the way up or all the way down on almost any point along the way in most rooms gives you hidden treats, be they stars, hidden doors, food, enemies with abilities, or even just new things to see. Full 3d would make this a lot more impossible to do, and would cheapen the effect regardless. Suddenly, you can look ahead and SEE all that stuff without even having to search for it.

City Trial managed that, obviously. But the City is tiny compared to what a level would have to be, and there's no start and end points - you just sort of fart around and explore.

So yes, I would hate a full 3d Kirby game. I think it wouldn't go with the spirit of Kirby games, I think it would hurt the gameplay more than it would enhance it, and I think it would be a useless extra only created to satiate people who for some reason don't realize how much worse a full 3d game would be.
